Thanksgiving tradition involves going to see Santa at the Zoo lights following Thanksgiving dinner. This year was perfect, not too cold and barely anyone there.

Now if you know me, you know that I like to pick out my kids clothes. Well it just so happens that the day before Thanksgiving my grandmother showed up with a red cowboy hat for Avery. So naturally she decided on Thanksgiving she needed to be a cowboy. This meant no pretty lacey shirt to match her sister and she threw a huge fit over wearing her cowboy dress and hat and boots. So at first I was determined for her to wear the nice matching outfit that I had taken time picking out and matching the night before. Then I started thinking, is it really going to hurt anyone for her to dress like a cowboy on Thanksgiving? I mean, shouldn't I be thankful that I have a happy, healthy daughter that is alive and with me and so what if she wants to be a cowgirl. So here I present cowgirl Avery with her clashing red cowboy hat and pink cowboy boots :)

Last year Tristan and I went shopping for his Halloween costume. He was super excited about his giraffe costume until he heard that all his preschool buds were being super-heroes. He really wanted to ditch his giraffe costume and trade in for something that blended in with the crowd. I insisted on him sticking with his giraffe costume and promised that next year he could be a super-hero. Can we say HELLO batman :) Avery was a beautiful pink fairy/princess compliments of her pal Sophie. Sage was an owl. I totally fell in love with this costume the minute I saw it on the Pottery Barn Kids website and snatched it up. Good thing since the costume sold-out well before Halloween and ended up selling for $150 on ebay.

So each year we bundle the kids up and head to the beach for our Christmas pictures. The past 2 years we have been lucky enough to have Jess come along as our photographer and each year the pictures just seem to get better. We went to Parlee Farms in Tyngsboro for apple-picking this fall. The kids love using hthe pulley system to feed the goats. They had fresh apple cider and apple donuts. Ya-ya came along to help us pick out the apples.

September 25th and it was absolutely beautiful, in the high 80's. It was my weekend to work and I was fortunate to be opted off from work all weekend. When I found out I didn't have to work, we took off and headed to the beach before the hospital could change my mind. The water was warm and we played until well past dinner time. This is why I need to live near the ocean, it is my favorite place!!

1st Day of School

It's the most wonderful day of the year!! Only half joking :) First day of school and the kids were super excited and headed in without looking back. Tristan is in the rainbow room and goes 4 mornings a week while Avery is in the orange room 3 days per week. We are all looking forward to a great year.

Ballet Begins

The girls started ballet class. Avery is taking a combo class which is 30 minutes of ballet, tap and hip-hop. She loves the hip-hop part and still doesn't understand why she can't wear her tap shoes to school. Sage is taking a baby ballet class and to date, she still isn't loving it. She spends most of her time clinging to my leg or crying. Hopefully she'll warm up soon.

Tristan turns 5!!

Can't believe another year has gone by. Tristan turned 5 on September 22nd at 12:10pm. We had a great birthday party at our local park again this year. Tristan loves all things sports and was very happy to have his friends play a soccer game. Tristan seems to be developing into a sensitive, independent, creative, athletic and all-around great kid. (still a little on the wild side). He adores his sisters, and loves his friends and school and hockey and soccer and animals and the list goes on.

I have posted about this park before, but anyone in the area should really check it out. One of my favorite parks by far. It has a great wooden boat and blocks that the kids can use to build, or slide on. All of the slides are built into the sides of hills, and there is a merry go round that is flush with the ground. Super cool and the kids love it too :)

Canoe Trip

This was a big year for Tristan, his first canoe trip on the Saco. He learned to cast his own fishing rod, ate fish for breakfast and sat up by the campfire. Of course, the girls and I were cozy in our beds at home.

Every year we go to Lynch park for the Cousin Picnic. We went even before we had children and it's funny to see how it's evolved. When Shane and I first started going, there were only 2 kids. Now we have always have at least 8 kids and this year we had even more. The flowers were beautiful and the kids loved finding sea creatures on the rocks.

On yet another beautiful day, we packed up the car and headed to Ogunquit to meet up with some old friends. Jen and baby Sylvia were able to come this year which made it extra fun!! All the kids got along great, even with the varied age span. We played in the tide pools, and then at the end of the day had pizza by the river. The kids had a blast and so did the moms!!

Seriously, I think there is not much out there that Tristan can't do. He continues to amaze me with his athletic abilities, whether it's swimming, soccer, hockey, and now rock-climbing, he always seems to perform way beyond his years. He said he wanted to try the rock wall, so we said go for it. And go he did, all the way up to the top so he could ring the bell, and then down he came.

Glen Ellis Falls

We headed up for a week at Bump's lakehouse in Maine. Glen Ellis is a perfect hike to do with kids. The falls are pretty amazing and the hike is a moderate incline but not long. Last time we did this hike as a family, Avery was on my back and Sage was in my belly. Time flies!!

We all piled in the car to check out the local music at the common. Beautiful night, clear skies, warm temperatures, but no musician. Eventually, we found out that the musician had moved to an indoor location because there had been a threat of rain. We ended up catching the tail end of the performance and the kids loved it.

All of the kids have been so amazing this year at the beach. Earlier in the season, I was thinking outloud to some friends about how I was concerned about getting to the beach with the 3 kids this year. Last year I thought, was easy, chasing 2 and wearing 1, anyone can do that. But this year- I was going to have to chase 3 kids. Now I had 3 mobile ones, and of course my older 2, aren't listening 100% of the time yet. But I knew somehow I would make it work, becuase I absolutely love the beach and even if I was running in 3 different directions the whole time, I would be there. Suprisingly the kids have been awesome- playing, swimming, building and playing some more. Seriously, some of my best days this summer, have been chilling at the beach with friends, because I have actually been able to sit and chat (like whole sentences) with my friends.

This year we decided to check out Southwick Zoo. They had some great animals, but first up the rides. The kids tried out the carousel first, which was probably a 5/10 on the fun scale. The planes with guns, now that was 10/10. The kids had a blast trying to shoot us on the sidelines, and for kids who don't have guns to play with - they sure knew what to do with them.

We went strawberry picking at Russel Orchards with some friends. The strawberries were delicous and despite their "no tasting" policy we were able to pick 3 full pints of strawberries to take home. They were sweet and juicy and ohh so good.

I love Good Harbor and that has always ranked number 1, but with 3 small kids your priorities change and Wingaersheek wins the number 1 spot with it's ease of keeping tabs on 3 roaming children. Tristan loves the rocks, Avery loves the tide pools and Sage loves everything.

Preschool Graduation

Tristan and Avery were both hits at their preschool graduation. Avery knew every word to the pledge of allegiance, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and did a great job dancing to the twist. Tristan was the loudest one there and belted out Grand Old Flag, Surfin USA and Rockin Robin. He suprised us for sure with his enthusiatic renditions of the songs along with his dancing moves.

We went to this awesome park in the Cambridge Commons. All of the slides are built into the terrain, they have a great pirate ship with light weight building blocks, water and sand tables, a great tire swing and a pulley/lever system for sand. After that we took a walk down Mass Ave to get some yummy frozen yogurt.

One of my favorite clothing brands for the kids has to be Matilda Jane. I love the versatility of the outfits and the ability to mix and match. Sage and Avery can even wear the same outfit. Sage is wearing Avery's clothes-just with the pants rolled at the waist. We get compliments ALL the time when we are out. At first I would try and explain that it is a trunk show company and with the blank stares-I now just you can't get it around here.

The beach was super cold-in Burlington it was almost 80-in Gloucester not even 60. Needless to say we weren't dressed warm enough but we were so excited to be at the beach that we ran and played anyways. Here are some pics of Tristan playing baseball. He is getting so big-when I look at him and see how much he can do-I am baffled by the fact that he is only 4.

We love this park in Lexington-great play equipment and it has nice trails to walk as well. Tristan has become an expert on the monkey bars-he can get across in the blink of an eye. Avery has been trying so hard to keep up with her brother-but as of yet-she hasn't figured it out.

Random Kitchen Fun

The kids love it and who knew they actually made Maclaren strollers for dolls. It has a real 5-point harness and comes in gender neutral colors. Even Tristan loves pushing it around. Sage is enjoying a snack while watching her brother bring the baby to the doctors "for shots that don't hurt that bad."

Avery loves her bed-it is her hideaway, her camp, her fort. Many morning Tristan and Avery will be heard talking about going camping in their tent, running from bears and wolves. I love hearing the development of imagination and role-playing. Here are Avery and Sage, playing before bedtime.

Winter Zoo Trip

I have to say that our zoo membership has been one of the best investments ever. This is our third year we have had one and we get our money's worth. In the spring/summer and fall, we visit the zoo at least once per week. During the winter, any mild day-we head off to the zoo. We also venture to Franklin Park during the summer and are hoping to get to Roger Williams soon.

Almost every day, around 1pm-silence can be heard in my house. It is the only time during the day when there is silence and I relish in it. I know this is the time that most mother's clean, do laundry, straighten up, cook, pay bills, something productive. But I'm not most mothers, Not me :) I use nap time to do whatever I feel like doing-catch up on Gray's-sure, grab a blanket and a good book and read-sure, take a long hot shower-sure, catch up with some old friends by phone or email-sure. Sometimes I even take a nap. This is how I ensure that I have time for me and therefore can devote my time to them when they are awake. For when they wake up-it's off to the musuems or playdates or playgrounds or swimming or it's baking, reading, painting, playing games.

Come in, but don’t expect to find

All dishes done and floors that shine.

Observe the crumbs, cereal, and toys galore.

The smudgy prints upon the windows and doors.

The little ones we shelter here

Happy 3rd Birthday Avery

Avery's birthday falls on New Year's Eve which will probably be great when she is older but for now, we always are trying to figure out the best time to celebrate. This year we opted for a combined party at the end of January. We rented out the perfect little playcenter for the event. Everyone had a great time, especially the birthday girl.

Avery is now 3, she weighs in at 30 pounds and 36 3/4 inches. She is totally hilarious and has a personality all her own. She is constantly talking and knows exactly what she wants and how to get it. She goes to school 2 mornings a week and absolutely loves it. She looks forward to going and would probably be happy if she could stay for lunch like her brother. She has been potty trained since before the summer and loves to get dressed by herself. Both Tristan and Avery have a love for pajamas and insist on changing into pajamas every time we come step foot in the house. She continues to love to eat and will try anything once. She loves to shop as long as she doesn't have to sit in a cart and still takes her beloved Kiki (blanket) everywhere with her. She is super loveable, freely giving hugs and kisses. She has become even more independent over the last year and can stand her ground with the best of them. My first daughter, with blond curls, big blue eyes and a fiesty streak, couldn't be anymore perfect.

First Night Ice Sculptures

Every year we love to take the kid's to see the ice scultpures that are done as part of Boston's first night. They loved the penguins at the Aquarium and Tristan was pleased to find a many in a canoe or kayak?? at Copley square. And on top of that they got ring pops too!!
